Hoo boy guys, let me tell you, it's been a long, stressful 4-some months. If you follow me anywhere-- Youtube, here on dA, twitter or tumblr-- you should be more or less aware of Rise and Fall's existence, but for those who aren't, I'll give a brief rundown:
Rise and Fall is a murder-mystery visual novel game with heavy accents of fantasy. It's the first in four planned games that'll be made to tell the entire story. This game contains a cast of 27 UTAU characters, but as we continue through the other games, the cast size will grow to about 40-50 UTAU characters.
While Rise and Fall uses UTAU characters as the cast, you do not have to know anything about UTAU to play and experience Rise and Fall-- the story, setting, relationships, and personalities are of original creation. Both UTAU users and non-UTAU users should be able to follow Rise and Fall just fine.
Technical facts:
The physical production time was about 3 months (August - November), but Rise and Fall began as a fanfiction in June.
Rise and Fall CH1 is 6 hours of gameplay.
The file size is about 700MB.
Rise and Fall is available for both Windows computers and Mac computers.
Many resources are borrowed. The BGM is borrowed from other games/series/NG artists (with the appropriate credit given of course), and the backgrounds are filtered photographs. However, Rise and Fall contains original art created by many overseas UTAU artists and users.
This game contains scenes and images of heavy violence, tragedy and death. Please do not download or play this game if you are sensitive to these kinds of things.
This game would have been impossible to make without the help of all of my friends, and so I'd like to take a little time to give credit and thanks where they're due:
Cutscene Art (she gets the credit for the background used in this promo too!)
ED Art
Proofreading & Beta-testing
Guest Art
also helped me with the Japanese used both in this picture promo and the promotional video (which if you haven't seen it, can be seen here: [link])
A big thanks to these guys, who did a lot of helping with in-game materials and art, but also a big thanks to all of you who supported the project and showed interest in it as it was being worked on! I really hope I won't let any of you down!
Note: This is my first visual novel game, and thus I'm sure there will be plenty of mistakes. I've learned a lot since I've started working on R+F, so I'm hoping that with the following chapters of this story, I will get even better at bringing the R+F experience to life and making it more enjoyable for everyone. I hope that even though it isn't perfect, you all enjoy the story that is Rise and Fall.
>.< umm.. this is a kinetic novel, since it didn't interact with users (doesn't provide choices) and provide only one ending but I still enjoyed this, I played this in a day! love love love the story!

Wow, I feel like this game changed my perspective of TATARI. Though, not really a game. If you guys ever want to add gameplay elements, something similar like "Corpse Party" would be perfect for this!
I downloaded this a while ago and just played through the whole thing, and I really like it so far. I know exactly nothing about UTAU fandom, but for the most part I was able to get through it without any fandom knowledge.
Writing-wise, I have to admit I cringed a lot at the grammar errors (e.g. using a comma at the end of quotes when it should be a period instead). The writing tends to get overly verbose, occasional awkward sentence structure, and there are some cases of infodumping where it's not really appropriate to do so. I'd suggest finding someone willing to go through and nitpick at every grammatical detail, because it could help polish the game quite a bit. I think the visual novel format helps in this case, because it kept me engaged in a story I otherwise wouldn't have looked twice at due to what I mentioned above.
I'm sure you've heard this before, also, but the progression of text was something that I found mildly annoying. I would have liked if at least line breaks had stopped to let me click to advance the text, instead of having the text progress all the way until the end of the page.
But all those are technical aspects which can be fixed. Now enough with the bad and on to the good, the part that really grabbed me: the story. The characters are well done, and the large cast size is mostly not overwhelming... except at the beginning, because everyone is introduced in quick succession, but after that, the survivors get fleshed out enough to distinguish them. (On a related note, perhaps I could suggest having the characters' surnames in their profiles as well? It gets confusing for a non-UTAU familiar person to remember which surname goes with which characer.) I love the mystery, and the entire time I kept getting the subtle feeling that something more was happening than was being let in on, so by the time the epilogue came around I was both surprised and not surprised at the same time.
It strikes me as very much like Umineko, except with clearly different rules so I need to get my mind out of the When They Cry-verse rules when I read this and try to figure it out. The mystery started off relatively tame (at least by my 07th Expansion-influenced standards) but by the end my jaw was on the floor and I was determined to go back and figure out who did all of it and how. When I get the chance I'll go back and take notes and come up with some theories. The desire to figure it out has grabbed me like it hasn't since I was solving Umineko. (As Umineko remains my favorite VN of all time, this is a massive compliment coming from me.)
I'll be eagerly awaiting CH2 and in the meantime trying to figure out CH1.
Eep an in depth review! I wasn't expecting this so long after it's release but I very much appreciate the time you put into it!
About the grammatical errors--I entirely agree. I myself cringed a lot at some of the typos and errors that made it through in the final cut. The verbosity is just my own personal preference in writing which I've received both praise and criticism for. It's definitely something I think will vary based on personal preference, but I can definitely understand why you might believe it's excessive. Should I finish CH2 I will most definitely have a proofreading processes that is a lot more thorough.
The text progression too I received some complaints about and definitely will be trying to use a different method next time around.
I'm incredibly flattered that you enjoyed the story and characterization! Admittedly, When-They-Cry was a HUGE influence on this work and I won't try to deny that for even a second. With the newer upcoming chapters I had definitely intended to work it out so that it had it's own unique charm and concept going for it. I hadn't expected non-UTAU community people to read into this project but your perspective and feedback on the surnames is entirely valid and I will definitely keep that in mind for the upcoming chapters!
Thank you very much for your input and your feedback! I really do appreciate it and I'm glad to hear from somebody outside of the community that the game was intended for! Thank you for reading through Rise and Fall and I'm very happy that you enjoyed it.
but I still enjoyed this, I played this in a day!
